Arrival of the Chief Guest, Dr. Akram Sheikh

Inaugural Address of the Chief Guest

Institute of Space Technology organized a UN sponsored international workshop from 31st August to 4th Sept on "Monitoring and Protection of the Natural Environment: Educational Needs and Experience Gained from UN/Sweden Training Courses on Remote Sensing Education for Educators".

The main objective of this workshop has been to enable educators from developing countries to introduce or enhance remote sensing courses in their respective academic institutions.

The Inaugural ceremony was presided by Deputy Chairman, Planning Division, Dr. Akram Sheikh who put emphasis on the importance and usage of Satellite Remote Sensing and GIS Applications and stressed the need of imparting state of the art knowledge to the new generation to cop with the challenges of the 21st century.

The key issues discussed are:

  • How GIS Technology is improving lives of people, (Protection of natural environment, water resources management, land resources management, identification of land ecosystem and soil fertility, animal habitant evaluation etc.)
  • Teaching Remote Sensing/GIS at Universities around the world.
  • New trends in application of remote sensing and GIS Technologies

The Participants in the workshop included active educators and also experts working in appropriate government organizations, research/academic institutions or with programs, projects and enterprises which are using remote sensing technology or GIS.
