World Space Week

Background

As you know, the success of space programs relies greatly on public understanding and support. It is therefore important to regularly communicate to the public about the benefits of space. I wish to propose a means to do so in highly synergistic manner.

In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared 4-10 October annually as World Space Week.  The objective is to celebrate internationally the contributions of space to the betterment of the human condition. Since the UN declaration, special public and schools events have been held in over 50 nations each year during World Space Week. Owing to Ramazan however, Muslim countries decided to hold this event at a time of their convenience. And it is thus that it is being celebrated from November 06-11, 2006 in Pakistan.

We believe that World Space Week offers unprecedented efficiency and effectiveness in educating the public about space.  By synchronizing public and educational programs under a common name, organizations can achieve greater media coverage and hence a wider audience than we could otherwise. Furthermore, by doing so during the UN-declared World Space Week, we can more easily demonstrate the international nature of space activities and our nation's space achievements.

In view of the above, we are holding an Inauguration ceremony on Monday, November 06, 2006 to mark the official start of the Space Week in Pakistan. Also, in this regard we shall be holding a Space Fair on our premises on Saturday, November 11, 2006, the purpose of which will be to create awareness and raise knowledge about space related education and activities among the youth.
