DESIGN BUILD AND FLY CONTEST

1st DBFC (Design, Build and Fly contest) was arranged by AIAA GIKI Chapter at Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Technology on 29th April, 2006.

This competition was the first of its kind, and was sponsored by STEM Carrier Project HEC, Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and National Engineering Competition. The competition was focused around a mission profile according to which every team had to design and build its own aircraft. It was open for all the undergrad students from HEC recognized Institutions of Pakistan.

Total of 31 teams were registered initially however only seven teams managed to get through the difficult task of designing and manufacturing of aircraft.

At Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad (IST), AISB (AIAA IST Branch) took the challenge for participating in the competition. Fahad Aman Khan and Amina Malik worked thoroughly on the complete designing and manufacturing of the Remotely Piloted Vehicle (RPV) named ‘The AMOK’. As the design report of the aircraft carried 50% weight age so it was systematically and meticulously written. Fellow AISB Members: Sabeeh Hassan Raza, Asad Muhammad Butt and Ammar Bin Shaukat also participated in the development and flight testing of the aircraft. Their helping hands proved a valuable asset for the overall team effort. The RPV was flown by Mr Kashif under very challenging flight conditions.

Although the GIKI airfield proved fatal for many participating teams but the IST’s ‘The Amok’ flew perfectly as per its design. Its flight was admired as highly stable and responsive both by the pilot and the crowd. An extended viva session was held for the evaluation of design report. Judges were impressed by the depth in designing procedure of the aircraft and it was declared as the best report of the competition. IST team won the overall 2nd prize of Rs 20,000, in the competition.
